The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is planning a “pharmacy” of erectile dysfunction tablets, to be available on the NHS.
Sildenafil (Viagra) is the only drug approved to treat erectile dysfunction in men. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, allowing men to achieve and maintain an erection during sexual stimulation.
The drug can help men with erectile dysfunction find their sex life within the normal range of around 50%. This will only improve sexual function in people with erectile dysfunction and does not increase the chance of a partner going hurt.
The MHRA has received reports of serious sexual adverse reactions including priapism (prolonged and painful erections), which can cause severe damage to the penis and seriously threaten the life of a man.
The safety of the drug has been established by a review of more than 1,000 NHS patient records. In the UK, men who take the drug can experience erectile dysfunction. This is known as impotence.
The drug is not recommended for use by women, children or adolescents under 18, as it can cause permanent damage to the penis.
A separate MHRA review of the drug was recently released and is expected to take up to four months.
The review also recommended that all men should be advised to inform their doctors of any existing health conditions before starting treatment with the drug.
The MHRA has received a letter from a woman, suggesting that she should not take the drug because of the risk of heart problems.
Dr Laura Squire, MHRA’s Chief Officer for Ethics, Watsons, stated: “We are delighted to announce that we have received a letter from a woman, suggesting that she should not take the drug because of the risk of heart problems.
“In order to discuss the potential risks and benefits of the drug with a woman, we have made changes to our communication with the woman.”
The MHRA is also advising men to avoid using the drug because of a possible heart attack or stroke or a history of other serious conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or the use of certain medicines, as these may increase the risk of cardiovascular events.

Pfizer has launched its first generic version of its blockbuster drug Viagra Connect, which has become the first erectile dysfunction drug to hit the market since Viagra was approved in 1998.
The announcement follows Pfizer's announcement last year that it had completed a Phase III clinical trial with the drug to assess its effectiveness in treating pulmonary arterial hypertension.
New Pfizer medicines, which are sold under a "pharmacy" licence, are to be supplied to patients for up to four weeks, before being sent for annual testing.
A number of patients taking the products had persistent symptoms for several months, which were then resolved with continued therapy.
The drug was first launched in the UK in 2003 and is already available in more than 400 countries.
But, in February, it was reported that a trial comparing the drug with sildenafil, a drug normally used to treat erectile dysfunction, had "a significant lack of power" in assessing its effectiveness.
A spokesperson for Pfizer, which is buying the drug, said: "We have received concerns and information from patients and healthcare professionals about the potential adverse effects of sildenafil, which is a commonly prescribed treatment for erectile dysfunction."
Pfizer is still considering whether to launch the drug, which will be branded as Viagra Connect, as a "pharmacy" and has not been given final approval for sale by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) earlier this year.
Last year, the drug was the subject of investigations by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
The MHRA has issued warnings about the safety of products with a "harmful" effect on the cardiovascular system, and it has suspended sales of some medicines in the last few months.
